Dr.
Leonard Ray Teel, professor of communication, is the founding
director of the Center for International Media Education. He
holds a Ph.D. in British colonial history and, as Center director,
has traveled widely -- in the Middle East, North and Central
Africa, South and East Asia, and Europe. He is author or co-author
of four books, including a text on journalism which has been
translated into Chinese, Arabic, Spanish, and Armenian. He oversees
the development and conduct of media professionalism workshops
notably for developing civic journalism and economic journalism.

Dr.
Carolyn Codamo serves as associate director of CIME. Since 1995,
she has assisted in securing funding for and conducting numerous
CIME workshops for journalists and journalism educators in the
Middle East and North Africa. She has been a major academic
participant in CIME's ongoing affiliation with Yarmouk University
in Jordan. She is currently involved with planning economic
journalism workshops in China. She specializes in the teaching
of media ethics and media history. |

Dr.
Michael Bruner, Research Associate with CIME, is an Assistant
Professor with the Department of Communication at GSU. He teaches
undergraduate and graduate courses in Human and Social Influence,
and Public Communication. His research focus is in critical
political communication, nationalism, globalization, and rhetoric
studies. Dr. Bruner is currently working on expanding the work
of CIME into Eurasia, especially as it relates to the development
of civil society and democracy. Dr. Michael is American.

Stacy
Schmitt is a PhD student in the Department of Communication,
Moving Image Studies at Georgia State University. She holds
a MA in Spanish Language and Literature from Georgia State
University. Her interests are: International Cinema, with
a special focus on Spanish Language and Italian Cinema, Psychoanalysis,
Feminist and Queer Theory, Post-Colonialism, Critical Race
Theory, Cultural Studies, Genre Theory, with a special focus
on horror. Her paper titled Racial Visibility in The Night
of the Living Dead, will be presented at the 2006 Popular
Culture Association’s conference. Stacy is the Managing
Editor for The Atlanta Review of Journalism History, an annual
journal publishing high-quality student journalism research.

Qing
Tian is a Ph.D. student in Public Communication of GSU. She
joined CIME from Fall 2004 and is now working in the research
Division. Her major responsibility is to help with various research
projects conducted by CIME faculty. She is also the assistant
editor of Journal of Middle East Media and the coordinator of
the China Gateway Project. Qing's research interestes include
new media, media effect and media history, She was born and
grew up in China.

Katie
Hawkins is an undergraduate journalism major. She has worked
with CIME since 2003 as a Presidential Scholar. Katie serves
as an editor of The Atlanta Review for Journalism History. She
traveled to the Middle East with Dr. Teel and Dr. Codamo in
March 2005, and spent a semester in London in fall 2005. Katie
plans to continue studying journalism in graduate school.

Shanna
Gildersleeve is studying for an M.A. in Film/Video/Digital Imaging.
She joined CIME in Fall 2005 as a Research Assistant in the
History of News Media. She helps conduct research for Media
History. She also assists with the Atlanta Review for Journalism
History.

Johanna
Hardison is an undergraduate student majoring in Nursing at
GSU. She is a Berner Scholar, and a Research Assistant for the
CIME. Johanna helps concuct research for various CIME grants.
She also works as Assistant to Editor for the Atlanta Review
of Journalism, an academic publication of CIME. Johanna is from
Vidalia, GA.

Growth
and Development Division |

James
Bratton is the Chair of the Growth and Development Division
for the CIME. He joined CIME in July of 2005 as a Research Assistant.
He is an MA student in the Communication Department with an
interest in Health Communication. Persuasive messages on prostate
cancer screening tailored for an African-American audience is
the focus of his thesis research. James takes special interest
in welcoming CIME Interns from the Middle East, where he has
traveled and worked in the past. A citizen of Canada, James
adds to the international profile of our organization. In addition
to the Middle East, he lived in Japan for five years and traveled
extensively in China, India, Pakistan, and many other Southeast
Asian countries. A favorite mode of travel is backpacking. In
Atlanta, James is a devoted bicycle and public transportation
commuter.

Jin
Zhao joined CIME as a Research Assistant in the summer of
2005. She works closely with the Growth and Development Division
in various grants in Middle East as well as China. She is
also the editor of the CIME website. Jin concentrates her
graduate studies in rhetoric, media and politics, and international
communication and globalization. She is also teaching freshman
composition at Georgia State University. Jin was born in Kunming,
China. She received her Bachelor's degree in English Language
and Literature from Beijing International Studies University,
and worked as a radio hostess at China Radio International
in Beijing before she came to the U. S. in 2004. Jin is fluent
in Manderin and English, and is an enthusiastic musician and
cheese lover.

Kari
Schenks, native of The United States of America, is a first
year graduate student of Mass Communication in the Communication
Department at Georgia State University. She acts as a Research
Assistant for CIME, assisting the Growth and Development Division
with research for and writing of grant proposals. Kari received
her undergraduate degree in Marketing and International Business
from Washington University in St. Louis. Before coming to Georgia
State University and joining CIME, Kari spent seven years working
in account management for a software company in Charleston,
SC that designs software for nonprofit organizations. Her area
of study is public relations.

Wael
Kamal, Egyptian native, he serves as the Deputy Director for
Public Relations. Wael comes from a production background in
filmmaking, TV, and photography. He joined CIME in 2004. Wael
is responsible for coordinating Events and Public Relations
for CIME. He has been involved with the international community
at GSU since January 2001. Wael accomplished numerous tasks
with the Office for International Scholars and Services at Georgia
State dealing with almost every nationality that arrived to
study or work at GSU. He speaks fluent Arabic, English, and
good Italian. Wael has a B.A. & Master's degree in Cinematography
from the Academy of Arts in Cairo, Egypt. He is a senior Ph.D.
candidate in Communication Department.

Eun
Hee Park is a graduate student of Computer Information Systems
in Robinson College of Business at GSU. She has been working
as a technical supporter and web master in CIME since spring
of 2004. Previously she had seven years teaching experiences
in computer educational institutes and a college in Korea and
one year web programmer experience in a startup company at Charlotte
in NC. She has interests in Information Systems such as Software
Engineering, Data Mining and Business Modeling. Eun Hee was
born and Korea.

AUSACE |

Megan
Louise Beall is a Ph. D. candidate in the area of Public Communication
at Georgia State University. She has been with CIME since Fall
2001. She has participated in ten World Media Forums, five Intercultural
Forums, and has organized the CIME Staff Retreat for Fall 2002,
2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006. Megan also works with the Arab Association
for Communication Educators (AUSACE), is the membership coordinator,
and serves as the editor for the AUSACE Newsletter. She has
been instrumental in the organization and welcoming of the AUSACE/
CIME Journalism Interns from the Middle East. Megan’s
research interests include: International Media - specifically
Middle Eastern, South African and Latino/a Studies, Religious
Rhetoric, Popular Culture, Post-Colonialism, Critical Race Theory,
Cultural Studies, Genre Theory, and World Wide Issues regarding
Peace, Justice and Reconciliation. Megan’s most recent
work, The Cuban Missile Crisis and the US/ Latin Confidential
was published in the Atlanta Review of Journalism History, 2003
edition. Rev. Beall is originally from the Bogotá Colombia;
South America and thus adds to the international profile of
our organization. Megan takes a special interest in traveling
having visited Lebanon, Egypt, Netherlands, Colombia, Panama,
Peru, Ecuador, Canada, and most recently South Africa.

Ling
Lu is a Graduate Research Assistant with CIME. She is currently
pursing her Master’s degree in Accounting at the J. Mack
Robinson College of Business of GSU. Ling has worked with CIME
since Summer of 2003. She is responsible for grant budgeting
for journalism workshops projects in the Middle East as well
as China. She is also responsible for payment requests at the
Center. Ling is from China.

Yenan
(Sarah) Du, originally from China, is a full-time graduate
student majoring in professional accountancy at the Robinson
College of Business at GSU. She worked as an accounting clerk
at Sheraton Atlanta Hotel prior to enrolling at GSU. She has
a BS degree in hospitality management from Florida International
University in Miami and a BBA from Institut Superieur de Gestion
in Paris, France. She is primarily responsible for grant budgeting
at CIME and other accounting related work.

Purva
Shah is currently doing an MBA with a concentration in Human
Resources at GSU. She joined CIME in 2004 as a Graduate Research
Assistant and is the chair of the Human Resource Division.
She is currently assisting CIME with research on NGOs in the
Middle East. Purva is from India.
