M.A.
Degree Requirements
The
Masters of Arts degree allows two options for completion
of requirements. One requires a written thesis at
the end of the student's coursework, and is recommended
for those intending to do further academic study in
a doctoral program. The other requires a practicum
instead of a thesis, and is recommended for those
who intend to emphasize a practical industrial application
of knowledge to a specific project within one of the
Masters of Arts emphases.
Master
of Arts - Research Thesis Track (a minimum
36-hour program)
1.
30 hours of graduate coursework in communication and
allied fields:
A.
6 hours of core courses: Comm 6010 and Comm 6030.
B.
18-24 additional hours in communication courses
designated by the area of of emphasis.
C.
Optional 0-6 of allied coursework in another area
of emphasis or outside the department as approved
by the advisor.
2.
Proficiency in a foreign language or approved equivalent
research skill.
3.
Prospectus defense.
4.
At least 6 hours of Comm 6990.
5.
A Research Thesis.
6.
A successful Research Thesis defense.
Master
of Arts - Creative Thesis Track (a minimum
36-hour program)
1.
33 hours of graduate coursework in communication and
allied fields:
A.
6 hours of core courses: Comm 6010 and Comm 6030.
B.
18-27 hours of courses designated by the area of
emphasis.
C.
Optional 0-9 hours of courses outside area of emphasis
or outside of the department as approved by advisor.
2.
Proficiency in a foreign language or approved equivalent
research skill.
3.
At least 3 hours of Comm 6990.
4.
A successful prospectus defense.
5.
A Creative Thesis project.
6.
A successful Creative Thesis defense.
